What is Secretary? Secretary is an application which works with Microsoft Entourage v.X. It allows you to type your Tasks, Events or Notes in natural, and it will create appropriate items in Entourage. For example, if you typed: "Big meeting with John, Adam and Lynn at Moscone Convention Center", Secretary would recognise that you wanted to make an Event, it would set the location of the event to "Moscone Convention Center", it would search your Address Book for contacts called John, Adam and Lynn (asking you choose which contact you mean, where more than one matching contact is found), and link those contacts to the new event. It will also set the Category of the event by inheriting categories from the contacts. But that's not all. Secretary allows you to fully customise the way in which it recognises what you've typed; you really can tweak the recognition to suit your own bizarre styles. It also shows you its interpretation of what you've typed before actually making the new item, and this interpretation updates live, as you type. Lastly, Secretary is triggered via an AppleScript in the Scripts menu in Entourage. So, you can invoke Secretary from within Entourage simply by choosing a menu-command, or using a keyboard shortcut (the default shortcut for Secretary is command-option-control-T). What do I need to use it? You need a Mac running Mac OS X 10.1 or later, and a copy of Microsoft Entourage v.X (part of Office v.X). Will it be compatible with older versions of Entourage? This hasn't been determined yet. Since Secretary X is a Cocoa application, it will only run in Mac OS X, so you could only use it with Entourage if you were running Entourage in the Classic environment. Secretary X will not run in Mac OS 9. I assume it will only support English? No, absolutely not. Secretary X is being written from the ground up to support very extensive localisation in as many languages as possible. We firmly believe that localisation is a critical issue, and it is our desire to provide our Mac OS X products in as many languages as we possibly can. We're committed to full translations of software UI, help, documentation and other elements. But we need your help! If you'd be willing to translate Secretary X into another language, contact us! (Note: you won't need to do any programming; we'll provide you with a list of words and phrases in several text files - you'll just translate those text files and send them back to us). Please help us to make Secretary X a useful tool for people all over the world. Will the localised versions of Secretary be released at the same time as the English version? If possible, yes. It depends on whether we can find volunteer translators. There will only be one application; if it has been localised into your language, it will automatically run in that language on your system (depending on what language you've chosen in the International pane of System Preferences in Mac OS X). Future localisations can be added into the application as plug-ins. Where can I find out more about Secretary X? If you have specific questions, please contact us. We'd love to hear from you about what you'd like to see in Secretary X, or to answer any questions you may have. In the meantime, take a look at the screenshots below. |
